I never thought that I would be able to install an automatic garden lawn sprinkler myself!
Every year my family and I go on summer vacation and, every year, I have to beg one of my neighbors to water my lawn while I am gone. You see, I live in Florida and it gets hot in the summer. It gets so hot that if my lawn isn't watered twice a week while I'm gone then it will be a patch of burnt tundra when I return. Maybe "patch" is the wrong word. I have a 1/2 acre lot and that's a lot of grass to water. Watering my lawn isn't something to be taken lightly either. My house sits in the middle of the lot, and then I have an in-ground pool, a patio in the back yard, and another one off of the master bedroom. Then I have some areas that are landscaped with bushes, trees, and flowers. This results in my having to water some of the smaller areas by standing there with my hose, while I hook up one of those rotary sprinklers and move it around to the various larger sections as each one gets watered. It takes me about two and a half hours, twice a week, to water my lawn by hand. So you see, asking a neighbor to water means asking them to give up five hours of their time to keep my grass green. It takes special neighbors to say "OK". This year I just didn't have the courage to ask my neighbors to dedicate five hours to taking care of my lawn. I knew that it was an imposition and I didn't want to take advantage of their kindness. This was going to be the year that I finally had an automatic lawn sprinkler installed. After all, mine was one of the only houses in the neighborhood that didn't have one and I was getting tired of the weekly five hour grind. I had found a coupon from a lawn sprinkler company that offered a $100 savings on any new automatic lawn sprinkler installation plus a free estimate so I gave them a call. That was on Monday. A salesperson came on Wednesday. He spent some time in my yard measuring and came back inside with a drawing. The drawing represented my lawn and those different sections that I watered were marked with dotted lines. He explained that those dotted lines represented "zones" and that my lawn had 6 zones. He also told me that he would install a timer that would automatically start and stop watering each zone. He would set the timer for the two days that I was allowed to water (Florida has lawn watering restrictions), and then he would set the start and stop time for each zone. He would also install a rain monitor that would recognize when it was raining so my sprinklers wouldn't run when the lawn didn't need water. Boy was I impressed! Then came the shocker. He said there was no problem getting the system installed by the time that we left for vacation. In fact, he said that his crew would be probably be in and out in one to two days at most. I was leaning forward in anticipation as he pulled out his calculator and started punching in numbers. A couple of moments later I got hit in the head with a brick! Well, not a real brick, but I was floored when he quoted $4500 dollars to install a sprinkler system. Yikes! I have a daughter graduating from High School in a month, and a son that's already in college, and an 8-year-old girl still at home. On top of that I needed a new fence AND I had that vacation coming up. "I'll think about it" I told him and thanked him for his time. I'm not a home repair master. I can do minor repairs, and the occasional "project", but I leave plumbing and electrical work (other than changing a washer, switch or outlet) to the professionals. Even so, the next time I went off to the home repair center I took the diagram that the sprinkler salesman made with me. What I discovered in the lawn sprinkler aisle shocked me to the core! Every sprinkler head, fitting, connection and length of pipe that was listed on the drawing were sitting in bins right there in the home center. By referring to the drawing, and finding the corresponding part in the bin, I soon discovered that almost 60% of the price that the lawn sprinkler salesman had quoted me was for labor! The lawn sprinkler company wanted to charge me $2800 for digging some holes and gluing PVC pipe together? That's when I decided to do it myself. I walked over to the home improvement books aisle to grab one of those "how to install sprinkler systems" books that I was sure I would find. Hmmm, I didn't see one. I asked a salesperson and she didn't think they carried such a book. "It would be a good idea though", she said. My favorite home center is in the same parking lot as one of those big chain book stores so I went over there looking for a book. Nothing. On the way home I stopped at the library. No dice. Then the light bulb came on and I did a search on the Internet. That's when I found a link to an e-book called "How to Build Your Own Automatic Lawn Sprinkler System". With great anticipation I clicked and there it was! I had found the definitive guide to installing an automatic lawn sprinkler and it was written in an easy-to-read format that even a weekend home repair warrior like me could understand!According to their advertisement the book was divided into three sections with each section dedicated to one phase of the project. Here's how the book was divided up: Part 1 - Designing and Planning
Part 2 - Installation
Part 3 - Watering Schedule & Support
The book gives you everything you need to get the job done including a professional design checklist, materials checklist, installation day preparation checklist, and a system install checklist so you don't forget or overlook any project steps. This book is 100% complete. Wait until you see how easy (and inexpensive) it is to design and install your own automatic lawn sprinkler! The guy that wrote this book is a licensed automatic sprinkler installer and he's spilled the beans on everything he knows. The only thing that I had a hard time believing was that he was selling the book so cheaply. If everything he said was true then this book was worth a lot of money! I ordered it. Try to imagine how proud I was when I fired up my do-it-yourself automatic sprinkler system for the first time and everything worked just like it is supposed to. I invited everyone on the block to come and gawk! One of my neighbors, who also waters by hand, asked me what I would charge him to install a system at his home! I didn't want to get into the sprinkler business (but you might want to), so I gave him the same link to that wonderful book that I'm about to give you: "How to Build Your Own Automatic Lawn Sprinkler System" Visit the site, read his offer, and then decide for yourself. Even if you have a whole lot less than a 1/2 acre of lawn to water, even if you don't live in Florida, you'll want to install your own automatic sprinkler system. I never realized how much money I was wasting by hand watering. The book showed me how little water my lawn actually needed when you distribute the water equally with an automatic sprinkler system. My water bill actually went down once I stopped over watering. So go ahead, take a look and make up your own mind. You really can design and install your own automatic lawn sprinkler when you have a pro's step-by-step instructions at hand. Contact Us | Privacy Policy | Terms Of Use
